When we first spoke to pop-rock singer Spencer Sutherland, he was just getting started and he had one song released. Now the 22-year-old has an EP out, just wrapped a tour with SoMo, and he’s ready to take on the world. What does this all mean to Spencer? “There’s nothing in the world that I’d rather do,” he said. “Not only the music part, but the performing and meeting fans. It all comes together and it’s the best feeling in the world.”

Recently we took a road trip to Columbus, Ohio (just outside of Pickerington, Spencer’s hometown) to spend the day with him. During an afternoon of eating, shopping and playing videogames, we sat down with him to talk about his career, his fans, and his music.

Spencer’s acoustic EP, Unveiled, was released in January of 2015. The album contains four songs including an acoustic version of his single “Heartstrings.” Spencer is excited to have an acoustic EP that shows off his voice.

“It’s super cool to get new music out to the fans,” he said. “They’ve been asking for a while… It just feels really great to give them what they’ve been asking for.”

Here and there you hear a performer say that he or she would like to quit being recognizable for a day or two. This is not the case with Spencer. “I just really want to tour and make music forever and meet all new fans,” he said. “That’s what I want my life to be.”

We got a chance to see that during our afternoon shopping together at the Easton Town Center, an expansive outdoor mall in Columbus. After an organic lunch at The Northstar Cafe, we headed to Forever 21. Spencer mentioned to me that he wasn’t very good at picking out clothes for girls, so I told him to pick something out for me and if I liked it, I would buy it. We went searching around the store and when he picked out something he thought I’d like, he showed it to me and I bought it. The shirt read “JEUNE ET BELLE” and not knowing French (I take Spanish), I didn’t know what it meant. Spencer enlightened me and told me it meant “young and beautiful.”

As we were walking out of the store we heard, “Spencer!” coming from behind us. We turned around and there were two college-age girls coming toward us. They tracked us on Twitter – our phones were blowing up in line at Forever 21 – and actually left school to meet Spencer. He greeted them with a smile, took pictures, and stopped for a little conversation. “I love meeting fans and I love talking to them,” he said. “I meet everybody at the show, everybody that wants to meet me, I meet.”

After we got out of the store, Spencer told me this happens a lot when he’s home. One time, he got mobbed outside a store, and the distraction actually got the workers a little frustrated. Another time, a girl showed up at his house. Her Christmas present was driving eleven hours from Atlanta to Ohio to meet him — even though Spencer wasn’t planning on the visit. “It was cool that they’re that dedicated, that they’ll drive eleven hours,” he said.

This all sounds like a great time doesn’t it? Touring the United States, making music, and meeting new people constantly; overall just doing what you love? Like anything, there is a lot of sacrifice, but, Spencer said, “if it’s your passion you should absolutely do it because you’re only on this earth for a certain amount of time.”

I’ll leave you with a little piece of advice from Spencer: “I think you should do what you love and love what you do.”
