To achieve something, you need to believe that it can happen. To believe it, you need to picture it. Jordyn Wieber’s success as an Olympic gymnast is proof.

Jordyn is one of the “Fab Five” United States gymnasts who won gold in the all-around competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics. LSY! chatted with Jordyn before her performance in the Progressive Skating & Gymnastics Spectacular. She talked about some of the sport psychology techniques that helped her become one of the best gymnasts in the world.

“You learn the mental game through doing different competitions,” said Jordyn, who began gymnastics at age 7. “By the time I got to my career now, I’ve learned over the years to be mentally strong and to do exactly what I want my body to do.”

Though she’s only 18, Jordyn has mastered the mental side of her sport thanks to starting at a young age. Multiple studies and books on the driving forces behind success point out that at least 10,000 hours, or 10 years, is the amount of time needed to master a skill or profession. Which means Jordyn’s early start (which is common for elite gymnasts) helped her reach a high level at a still-young age.

One of Jordyn’s key techniques for success is mental visualization. She starts visualizing her routine a week before and runs through it in her head every night.

Visualization is more than a preparation strategy. The technique also helps her overcome the mental slumps that every athlete experiences.

“It’s visualizing exactly what I want to do in my head,” she said. “Gymnastics is such a mental sport.”
