Spencer Sutherland takes a Big Time Rush from a Greek diner

Spencer Sutherland took a “big time” opportunity and spun it into a musical career.

Imagine yourself in the place of a teenage boy, wanting to pursue a music career. You live in a small town in Ohio and you’re singing at a Greek restaurant on Monday, a Mexican restaurant on Tuesday, and an Italian restaurant on Wednesday. You’re just trying to get yourself noticed. You see auditions for a new local band that needed a back-up guitarist, and you go for it!

While you’re at the audition, the manager asks you if you sing.

You do.

When you sing for her, she asks you if you want to open for Big Time Rush.

Doesn’t seem imaginable, does it? Seems like a dream? Well, it was a dream for 20-year-old Spencer Sutherland—a dream come true.

“I literally went from playing for fourteen people on Friday night, to 20,000 people on Sunday,” he said. “Ever since then, it’s just been a crazy ride up.”

Still, the business can have its downside. Spencer told me he basically lives in hotels. But, there are also huge upsides! One is that you even get to go on tour with big names.

“I’ve performed with some really cool names: Stefanie Scott, Ariana Grande, Emblem3, Big Time Rush, and it’s really cool to be able to say that,” Spencer said, also emphasizing, “There’s nothing in the world I’d rather do.”

You don’t hear that statement about a career very often, but for Spencer, his career has had such a positive impact on his life that he really means it.

“My mom is the most proud mother ever,” he said.

She probably became even prouder recently when Spencer’s first single, “Heartstrings”, hit iTunes.

“It’s so cool that I can say that I have something on iTunes,” he said. “It’s only been out for (a few weeks) and it’s still new to me. It’s something that I’ve been looking forward to for a couple years.”

We all know that one love song that just gets to us. Either we just really like the beat, the words, or we can relate well to the song.

That’s what Spencer is aiming for with the song.

“It’s basically about this girl who is just really hot and cold,” he told LSY! in a recent interview. “One day we’d be talking all day and the next day I wouldn’t hear from her. It’s something that I think a lot of people can relate to. It’s really heart-wrenching but it’s something that a lot of people go through.”

So if there are just a few things that you get from this, what would they be? Dreams do come true? Hard work pays off?

Those are true but Spencer puts it into better words: “The number one thing is to make it’s something you love, and if it is, you should go for it. Be prepared for the sacrifices, because there are sacrifices that you have to make. Also, surround yourself with good people.”

I think that sums it up quite nicely.
