It’s good to say no (even to Beyoncé!)

Do you recognize the women in this picture?

One is Beyoncé (I’m guessing you knew that!), and the other (with keytar) is Heather Morris, former dancer for the diva and now a star on Glee.

My wife and I have been friends with Heather since we meet her in 2007 on Beyoncé’s tour. (In fact, that’s when my wife shot this photo – during their show in Cleveland.) I was interviewing Heather for a story in Dance Spirit magazine, and I remember her hinting at someday wanting to become an actress.

As we kept in touch over the next few years, what impressed me is how she became that actress. I won’t rehash the whole story here – you can head over to our YouTube channel and watch my various interviews with Heather for that – but I will highlight the one decision that made people think Heather was crazy: When Beyoncé offered her a spot on the next tour, Heather said no.

No.

How many people say that to Beyoncé?

It turned out to be a major career move, however, one that led to Heather landing her career-breakthrough role on Glee.

Watch our video below to get the details (I dug way into the LSY archives for this one!) … and think: Should you be delivering a difficult “no” to something, or somebody, while you chase your dreams?
